Tokugawa Shogunate and Edo culture
What is the Edo period?
The Edo period began in 1603 when Tokugawa Ieyasu established the shogunate in Edo (now Tokyo). For 265 years, spanning 15 generations until Tokugawa Yoshinobu, Edo served as the political center of Japan.
This era of peace lasted for over two and a half centuries—a remarkably rare phenomenon in world history. Looking at these models, you can easily imagine the vibrant townscape and the daily lives of the people who lived during that time.
