About the Kitamaebune
The Kitamaebune was a legendary class of cargo ships that dominated the shipping routes of the Sea of Japan from the Edo period through the Meiji period. Unlike standard transport ships, it operated as a "floating merchant house"—the shipowners purchased goods at one port and sold them at another, generating immense profits through active trading along their journey.

To withstand the famously rough and turbulent waters of the Sea of Japan, the Kitamaebune featured a distinct design. Compared to the Higaki Kaisen that sailed the calmer Pacific coastal routes, its hull was constructed with a dramatic, pronounced upward warp (curvature) at the bow and stern to navigate heavy waves safely.
